Windows 10 October 2018 Update (1809) Still Flawed, Incompatible With Some AMD GPUs

LAST week, Microsoft rereleased the Windows 10 October Update version 1809, after fixing the data deletion bug in the previous one.

However, the latest update is still flawed and unusable by many AMD and Trend Micro customers. According to ZDNet, the biggest issue is that the File Explorer still reports the mapped network drives as broken, even when there’s nothing wrong with them.

Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and suggested a few workarounds, but they aren’t exactly useful. In fact, those solutions could lead to more problems for businesses that mostly rely on their mapped network drives.

The company admitted that “mapped drives may fail to reconnect after starting and logging onto a Windows device.” Microsoft says it is working on a solution, but also made it clear that a fix won’t be arriving before 2019.

So there is no choice for businesses but to make do with Microsoft workarounds for now. For those who still haven’t installed it, IT pros warn them from postponing Windows 10 1809 installation as long as possible.

Another compatibility issue lies between 1809 update and Trend Micro’s OfficeScan as well as Worry-Free Business Security software. The same issue persists with AMD Radeon HD 2000 and HD 4000 series graphics cards too.

Trend Micro is currently working on patches to improve compatibility with Windows 10 1809. Unless it is released, users won’t be able to install the latest version of Windows update as Microsoft is blocking those updates for now.

Microsoft is also doing the same for consumers with affected AMD graphics cards. Users who have an AMD Radeon HD 2000 or HD 4000 series card might have noticed performance issues on the lock screen or the “INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005_atidxx64.dll” error.

Even though those are old graphics cards, it is surprising to see that a software giant like Microsoft would ship Windows 10 updates with flaws like these.
